As more inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs) connect to the grid, utilities and developers face growing questions about stability, power quality, and reliable interconnection, particularly in weak distribution systems. Differences in screening methods, modeling assumptions, and study practices can produce inconsistent results. These inconsistencies can contribute to project delays, interconnection uncertainty, and potentially unnecessary grid reinforcement. Understanding when more detailed analysis is needed is an important part of addressing these challenges. On October 1, 2026, RLC Engineering’s Michael Hanestad, PE, Principal Power System Engineer, joined Chien Tschang of NYSEG/Avangrid and Dr. Leo Jiang of Clarkson University for an Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG) webinar exploring these issues. The session, “Stability and Dynamics Studies of DERs in Weak Distribution Systems: Best Practices for EMT Studies and Utility Applications,” covered:

  • Stability screening methodologies used by utilities

  • Trends and challenges across projects in the Midwest and Northeast

  • Perspectives from utilities and DER developers

  • When more detailed electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis may be needed

For utilities and developers navigating DER interconnections, the discussion offers insight into how the industry is evaluating stability concerns and where EMT studies can support a more detailed understanding of system behavior. The recording is now available. Watch the full ESIG webinar →
